Project Wildbird
How would you like to have free birdfeeders, poles, squirrel baffles, and all your birdseed for a year? And the birdseed is delivered right to your door! That’s what
you will get if you become a participant in Project Wildbird. And all you have to do is watch and record the birds that come! What a deal! I thought “that sounds like
a win-win situation for me, since I:
- Feed the birds,
- Watch what comes and
- Keep lists of the birds that come.
I’ve enjoyed the first year so much, I’m signing on for a second. I have learned much even though I’ve been feeding birds in my backyards for over 40 years. Plus,
I haven’t had to buy any birdseed, and this system actually works to keep the squirrels off! I haven’t had a squirrel on a feeder all year!!! THAT makes it all
worthwhile alone!
It does require a time commitment, observing and entering data, but it’s not much considering what you receive in return.
I was worried about the time commitment when I signed up, because we like to travel, and with a new grandson I knew there would be many short trips this year. It
hasn't been a problem, because the year is divided into the four seasons, and you monitor birds for 2 months out of 3 for each season. That gives you a month to
travel, etc., each season (4 months per year) and can be done anytime during the season.
The monitoring consists of a 45 minute period every other day, at whatever time that is convenient for you and there are birds coming to the feeders, hopefully the
same time each day. The off days you rotate the feeders. After each 8 day cycle, you change the type of food in the feeders and start a new cycle. Data entry is done
on their web site.
The support from the people running this program has been fantastic. I haven’t encountered a single problem or question that wasn’t answered or handled quickly, and
everyone has been wonderful to deal with.
They are looking for more participants, so if this sounds like something you would be interested in, check out the information on this website for all the details.
